Upgrade maintenance windows into standard incidents

Sometimes maintenance doesn't go according to plan. Whether unexpected issues arise during scheduled work or services don't return to normal performance levels afterward, you now have a seamless way to escalate your maintenance windows into full incidents to get back to typical performance levels.

What's New

You can now convert any maintenance window into a regular incident with a single action. Rootly preserves all the context and timeline events from your original maintenance window while running your typical incident workflows to ensure seamless coordinated incident response.

How It Works

Convert maintenance windows to incidents in two ways:

  • Web interface: Click the "Convert to Incident" button from any maintenance window page
  • Slack: Use the /rootly convert maintenance command directly from your maintenance incident's Slack channel

Once converted, the incident inherits the maintenance window's timeline and context, ensuring nothing is lost for postmortem analysis. Your team's standard incident escalation procedures, notifications, and workflows will trigger automatically from that point forward.

Why This Matters

Maintenance work can be unpredictable. When things don't go as planned, you shouldn't have to choose between losing important context or manually recreating incident details. This feature bridges the gap between planned maintenance and unplanned incidents, giving you the flexibility to respond appropriately when situations evolve.

The converted incident retains all maintenance window data, making post-incident reviews more comprehensive and helping teams learn from both the planned work and any unexpected complications that arose.
