Alert Deduplication

Alert Deduplication

Monitoring tools often re-notify at regular intervals for the same issue. This can flood responders with duplicate alerts that don’t add new information. With Alert Deduplication, Rootly now ensures recurring events for the same alert are appended to the original alert’s timeline instead of creating new alerts. Responders get a complete picture of the issue in one place without unnecessary noise.

Why it matters

On-call engineers need clarity, not noise. Alert Deduplication:

  • Streamlines triage: All recurring pings for the same event appear in one alert’s timeline.
  • Reduces false load: Prevents responders from being paged multiple times for the same issue.
  • Preserves context: Shows frequency and recurrence without creating duplicate alerts to investigate.

This makes on-call shifts calmer, faster, and more reliable.

Important: This is different from Alert Grouping.

  • Grouping combines similar but distinct alerts for easier tracking and increase context.
  • Deduplication collapses the same alert into one timeline for clarity.
